All of our Iowa unschooling friends are so happy for their opportunity, and now, after reading this, I am even more excited for them. I get that your son wrote this in 9th grade? Sounds more like an early 20-something. I'm going to post this to my FB so some of my mainstream/schooly friends can read.Woodsykrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01526551498738123545noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16522520.post-52003596962550768592009-03-20T19:12:00.000-08:002009-03-20T19:12:00.000-08:00I just wanted to say that I appreciate this post v...I just wanted to say that I appreciate this post very much. My husband and I are very much on the fence about Homeschooling/Unschooling and reading a perspective from a teenager is extremely helpful.
Thank you for this.
Alisha (my son is only 3 and I am already agonizing about school)Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02632409767996742540noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16522520.post-86098724539950441782009-03-19T16:11:00.000-08:002009-03-19T16:11:00.000-08:00Kevin your essay was and still is brilliant. I met a Master's student during my History degree who was amazed when his supervising professor said, "I know the first year student's writing goes beyond disgraceful, but as long as the name is written in the correct spot you give them a 'D'." Your writing is very well paced and the thoughts well organized - the grammar will come although I saw very little wrong with it. Way to go and I've passed your essay onto many who are just starting down the unschooling path with their children - including me! You are an excellent example of the philosophy!

Cheers!
Stacey (Mom to 3 boys in Calgary, Canada)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16522520.post-13837495115544017802009-03-03T14:21:00.000-09:002009-03-03T14:21:00.000-09:00Clear headed. For some reason, he is wanting more "formal" education so we support his endeavors. It's interesting though that the subjects he enjoys he plugs along with fine but the subjects he doesn't like he has hardly done anything with, as far as the correspondence goes. Unfortunately, he has put himself in the system and has to play somewhat by their rules. I'm sure the correspondence office will be phoning me soon with concerns that some of his subjects are way behind. Oh well! He says there are things he misses about being at the school full-time. I think it mainly has to do with him feeling a part of something, even if that something is a jail. He misses some of the daily happenings.Heidi Snavleyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11954842963823414136noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16522520.post-23149134222747864532009-02-25T14:03:00.000-09:002009-02-25T14:03:00.000-09:00I studied English and journalism in college, and, ...I studied English and journalism in college, and, while I didn't go through Kevin's essay with a fine-tooth comb, I was very impressed by his level of written communication. We recently moved to Iowa from Nebraska and the homeschooling laws here in Iowa are so restricting. We have a great supervising teacher (who is also a homeschooler) and without her, I don't know how we would have survived here!

I was a biology major/Enlish minor in college and let me tell you--if a student of mine came to me with an essay like that, I would be THRILLED. Maybe it needs more editing, but maybe it just needs to stay the way it is.

Your essay has refreshed me considerably and I may be able to survive the next few weeks of homeschooling because of what you've given me in this essay. My next question would be: When can I expect your next motivational essay, because I'm going to need it soon!!!

Thank you very much, Kevin.Melanie Thompsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17869380941779777428noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16522520.post-58797185002241430072009-02-16T12:26:00.000-09:002009-02-16T12:26:00.000-09:00Thank you for this post, I really needed it! The person that I was responding to was actually responding to the prior poster who commented on his grammar. My bad! She set me straight and I stand corrected, with my tail between my legs, lol. The prior poster made a rude comment regarding his grammar so I still needed to re-post for my own peace of mind. I'm really glad so many people enjoyed the essay and I think it has a lot of relevance in the unschool world.Heidi Snavleyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11954842963823414136noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16522520.post-49955267615031252842009-02-08T19:29:00.000-09:002009-02-08T19:29:00.000-09:00This comment has been removed by the author.Heidi Snavleyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11954842963823414136noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16522520.post-52251655236991791072009-02-08T19:11:00.000-09:002009-02-08T19:11:00.000-09:00My husband has talked about Kev's essay with me an...My husband has talked about Kev's essay with me and he was impressed. I am stunned that people would be so rude. The essay was and is amazing and stands on it's own, correct grammar or not. If I can read it and take it for the value in it everyone else should be able to. After all, I'm the one who during conversation corrects grammar in my head. Please tell Kevin that his essay rocks...both versions!Shady Ladyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05955726656904697280noreply@blogger.com
